It’s a Wonderful Life

“My butt is stuck to the rug,” Ursus announced. Or more accurately, the rough fibers were encroaching on his cheeks, scratching at places better left alone. He shuddered to think what damage he’d suffer if laying on his stomach.

Joey stretched out beside him, reminding him of a languid satisfied feline in the sun, and flung her arm over his chest with a mumbled, “Treacherous carpet. How I hate it so.” He couldn’t help but notice how the position pressed her breasts against his ribs, the soft globes searing hot on his skin.

“Scoot closer,” he said, turning to the side and tucking his arm under her head so he could nuzzle the graceful curve of her neck. “You’re about to fall off the floor.”

“I’m fairly certain that isn’t possible.” She stifled a yawn and snuggled deeper into the embrace, ducking under his jaw to lay her cheek next to his heart. “I could stay here the rest of my life.”

“Then I’ll never get this nappy floor covering out of my ass.”

Her laughter was muffled under his chin and he smiled at the melodious racket. He’d never heard a sweeter sound and doubted he ever would. This moment was perfect. He was whole again, thanks to the amazing woman in his arms. Not only had she saved his life, she’d saved his soul.

He’d been a festering useless prop; bitter about the past and apathetic towards the future. He was a breathing corpse without purpose, until she bulldozed the life back into him.

He didn’t deserve her, but prophecy or no, he wouldn’t give her up. Hell had gotten to her once, but never again. And Heaven, well, they’d deal with that side another day.

“Oh, I missed the show?” Devi’s voice boomed through the house, causing Ursus and Joey to bolt upright. “Always a day late and a credit card short.”

Ursus sighed, shifting a blanked to cover them.

Or maybe they’d deal with it today.
